id just look around your neighborhood and see what looks the best and shiniest and hardiest and go ask them what it is.. if they dont know, ask them if you can take a sample (from an inconspicuous spot by a tree or somewhere in the corner) and take it to the gardening place and ask them for that type…

Winter rye grass germinates and grows rapidly. This is definitely the grass to plant in order to fill some bare patches and green up the lawn over all.
Centipede grass is a fine textured grass which requires little mowing. It requires a fairly rich soil, not a sandy soil. It grows at a moderate pace which is not fast enough to do what you are wanting to do.
